Carlos Sastre wins Tour de France

Incredible, Spain is the country who is celebrating the most when it comes to sports this year, first Rafael Nadal wins Rolland Garros and Wimbledon, then their national soccer team wins the Euro Cup 2008, and to finished greatly, Carlos Sastre celebrates with a few victory laps around the Champs-Elysees as he just won the toughest cyclic competition worldwide, the Tour de France.

Sastre had a good deal of extreme competition fighting for the first place against Australian Cadel Evans, who has finished second and with less than one minute of difference from the first place for two years straight, last year it was against Alberto Contador.

The win comes as a way to clean Spain’s bad name for last year’s disqualification of Contador and his team for doping reasons, though Spain’s runners are clean this time around, this year hasn’t been an exception when it comes to drug usage, as Dmitriy Fofonov, who finished 19th overall, tested positive for banned stimulant heptaminol, and got fired from team Credit Agricole.

Organizers of the event are clear about the increment of security this year when it comes to stop the usage of prohibited substances, and in despite of Fofonov’s situation, it seems like they are doing a good job on that respect.

Tour de France: Evans wears yellow shirt for the first time on his career

The Tour de France began on July the 5th and will end on July the 27th, and it’s currently on it’s 10th stage, which was comprised of 97 miles begining in Pau to end in Hautacam.

Australian Cadel Evans thought his run at the tour was over when he crashed yesterday at the first stage through the Pyrenees, but he got back on track the following day for a glorious personal moment: winning the stage and wearing the yellow shirt for the first on his career.

Evans belongs to the Duval-Scott team and this meant their third win on the current 95th edition of the Tour de France.

The stage winners have been varied, with just Mark Cavendish (stages 5 adn 8) and Riccardo Ricco (stages 6 and 9) repeating twice.

The Tour de France is left 11 stages, and on stage 15, the tour will head to Italy to come back to France on stage 16.

As we all know the Astana Team, the one from the current title holder, Alberto Contador, was involved in a doping scandal last year, and due to that, either Contador or third-place Levi Leipheimer didn’t got the chance to compete at the 2008 version of the tour.

Currently Silence Lotto’s Cadel Evans is the overall leader, with Fränk Schleck of team CSC Saxo Bank going in second and american Christian Vandevelde of team Garmin-Chipotle in third.

More on the tour soon...

Frenchman Feillu is heading the Tour de France

Frenchman Samuel Dumoulin won the third stage of the Tour de France and frenchman Romain Feillu finish third on the flat 208-kilometer (129-mile) stage from Saint-Malo to Nantes to claim the overall leader position.

This is a great moment for France, as this is the first time since Cyril Dessel in 2006 than a rider from the home country to wear the yellow jersey.

Feillu is no amateur, as last year he won the Tour of Britain, and this time he’s ready to win the 95th edition of the Tour de France, the most famous and acclaimed competition in cycling world wide.

The frenchman will have to deal with a couple of professional road racing cyclists in order to win the Tour, as Italian Paolo Longo Borghini is second in the overall general classification, while American William Frischkorn is third, if he can manage to stay at the top of the table, the french people will have alot to celebrate when the Tour is over.

Venus Williams won fifth Wimbledon title

Serena Williams is an outstanding tennist, but it has being overshadowed by sister Venus, who just won her fifth Wimbledon title in 8 years.

Venus Williams is on the run to match Martina Navratilova’s record of nine titles, and as of now, she have joined a small select club of five-time winners, the other members are Navratilova, Steffi Graf (7) and Billie-Jean King (6).

It also meant the 7th grand slam finals to have the Williams sisters as the main characters.

This surely means alot for Venus, as critics were saying that she was at her last moments of glory two years ago, now she has proven the tennis world that she still has alot to give.

It seems like if Wimbledon’s equivalent of a cup was named after the 28 year-old american tennist: the Venus Rosewater Dish, a famous plate made of silver who has been awarded to the women’s singles champion since 1986.

Sure, both sisters are almost matched even at the amount of money each one has made on their individual carrers at $20 million dollars, but in despite of being a former world number one, Serena hasn’t achieved what her sister has, as Venus Williams currently holds 37 titles, while kid sister Serena just 12.

Favre denies return to Packs

Of course, if you are Aaron Rodgers and are faced against the three-time MVP Brett Favre in a battle of quarterbacks, is more likely that you will lose.

And Rodgers surely feels against the wall now that the rumors stired about Favre’s come back to the Packers, he might also feel tired of being compared to Green Bay’s all-time quarterback, "I don't feel I need to sell myself to the fans, they need to get on board now or keep their mouths shut." Said Rodgers in an article by Sports Illustrated.

Favre responded to the rumors from close sources to the Packs that “it’s all rumor, I know I can still play, but I just don’t feel like doing it”.

Even though Favre doesn’t start with the Packers this season, he still might be able to play as he is sided by Green Bay at the reserve-retired list, so if Aaron Rodgers gets injured, the 38 year-old Favre will likely wear the Packs uniform for one more season.

NBA Free agency period is on

The free agency period just started for the NBA, and Baron Davis was the player to make the first move as he opted out of his contract in order to leave the Warriors one year before the end of his contract and almost 18 million dollars.

The LA native have joined the Clippers whom are expecting to retain Elton Brand as the 29 year-old power forward also opted out of his contract with the Clips, but with the addition of Baron Davis, the worst team in american sports in general might have a chance to shine this coming NBA season.

So the Warriors are without Davis, and Monta Ellis as the guy taking over, interesting, but it seems like Golden State have better plans and they are on the run for Gilbert Arenas, whom is said to be the top available free agent in despite of his two recent knee surgeries.

James Posey is anothe players that is pretended by vairous teams including the Lakers and Pistons, so if the Celtics wants to keep the man who helped both Boston and the Heat to win championships, they will have to come up with something better than the$3,2 million dollars they gave Posey for last season.

All in all this are the best moves in NBA free agency right now, who knows, maybe better deals will show in a few days...

Williams sisters advance to Wimbledon semifinals

Only a few brothers in the world can say that they have gotten to the final stages of a competition, on the same sport and go into a singles match against each other. This is the case of american sisters, Serena and Venus Williams whom are ready to play the semifinals of Wimbledon, and so if they both get victories, they will go face-to-face to the finals.

Serena advanced after eliminating Agnieszka Radwanska 6-4, 6-0 on Tuesday, while Venus took on Tamarine Tanasugarn in straight sets, now Serena will go against Jie Zheng while current title holder will meet fifth seeded Russian Elena Dementieva.

Venus won last year at the finals against Marion Bartoli of France to achieve his fourth Wimbledon title, and won to her sister back in the Wimbledon finals of 2002 and 2003, and overall, she is going for her fifth title in nine years.

Will this be the time for Serena Williams to take the title out of her sister’s hands? I don’t think so, but everything is possible as they both seemed to be the very best female tennists in the world as of now.
